Fair Coffee
& Cacao Trade

Rebel Merchants is dedicated to facilitating ethical and transparent trade between small-scale coffee and cacao growers and specialty coffee roasters and artisanal chocolate manufacturers across Europe.

We are based in Germany, have roots in Guatemala and were founded with the mission to create a more inclusive and fair coffee value chain. Our company today works directly with cooperatives and independent farmers in Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua to help them overcome the structural barriers of international trade.

Rebel Merchants emphasizes on organic farming, sustainable development, and fair compensation. We aim to bring high-quality, traceable coffees and cacao beans to markets that value both excellence and social impact. Operating under a model of partnership and cooperation, we foster a direct-trade model that involves social and environmental responsible sourcing, lasting relationships, and community development.

Our community connects everyone involved in producing and appreciating high-quality coffee and cacao — from farmers and cooperatives to roasters, chocolatiers, and quality experts.

Single Farmers

We work with single farmers that develop their own flavor profiles who take the extra mile in caring for continuous quality in their crops. Small lots come with the face of their growers and have not only a personal story but also special flavors. We often find single farmers through their associated cooperatives.

Cooperatives

Cooperatives help farmers select and maintain lots with unique flavors while providing guidance on sustainable agriculture. Our cooperative partners are often organic and Fairtrade certified, and may hold additional certifications such as the Symbol of Small Producers (SPP), Rainforest Alliance, or Slow Food.

Independent Farms

The network of independent farms - often family-owned - provides coffee varieties with lower yield, higher maintenance or less market demand. They concentrate on exceptional qualities and seek for direct and lasting partnerships.

Quality control and certifications

Quality of the bean is the single most important aspect of our work. Our long-term and independent quality control partners facilitate throughout the year and especially during harvest times with their expertise.

We believe in certifications that strengthen the efforts of our partners and give them better opportunities in promoting their products. We hold organic certification, are part of the fairtrade and Slow Food network and have worked with the Symbol of Small Producers (SPP) certification in the past. We are currently supporting members of the Deutsche Rösters Gilde and the International Women’s Coffee Alliance (IWCA).

Specialty buyers

We supply small and medium-sized specialty coffee roasters and artisanal chocolate manufacturers who value outstanding quality, traceability, and a direct connection to the farmers and origins of their products.

Our role

Rebel Merchants acts as a bridge between growers and makers. With roots in Guatemala, Costa Rica, the United States, and Germany, we combine agricultural expertise with a deep commitment to sustainable farming, fair trade, and meaningful relationships between people, plants, and the environment.

Story

We began our journey in 2018 with a simple but powerful idea: to help farmers connect with markets that value not only the quality of their coffee, but also the values and human relationships behind it.

What sounds simple in theory is, in practice, deeply complex. Yet from the start, we knew we didn’t want to be driven by profit alone — but by purpose. We believe that every commercial relationship can also be an act of solidarity, empathy, honesty, justice, and generosity — values that can and should be practiced in trade.

Our story began with Guatemalan coffees, thanks to long-standing connections with friends, family, and former colleagues. Later, we expanded to Honduras, and more recently to Nicaragua and Costa Rica. We continue building meaningful partnerships to bring exceptional coffees from other origins.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who has lent us a hand, shared encouragement, and helped us continue along this path.

Transparency

  • Our focus is not on maximizing margin or volume. Instead, we prioritize on long-term empowerment, reinvesting in farmer-led production networks and ensuring larger income for male and female farmers through better market access, and transparency in our own supply chain.

Connection

  • We work directly with farmers, not through opaque layers of exporters, mills, and traders. This ensures that roasters know who grew their coffee, and producers understand how their work is valued at the final market and by whom.

Impact

  • We build long-term sourcing partnerships that boost producers’ quality, infrastructure, and resilience. Trust and collaboration replace volatility. Using markets as a tool, we secure fair access, raise farmers’ incomes, and forge lasting ties between disadvantaged producers and mission-driven roasters. This isn’t a class conflict but a movement to create opportunity where it’s most needed.

Authenticity

  • We believe that origin matters, and so does identity. Each coffee we promote under this collaboration comes with a narrative, not just a label—spotlighting the farmer behind the beans, their cooperatives, and the impact their work creates.

Respect

  • Our commitment to transparency begins with respect — for the people who cultivate our coffee. We ensure that cooperatives and farmers have full visibility into our cost structure and the final prices offered to our partners in the European Union.  We never pressure farmers to lower their prices. Instead, we recognize their challenges, value their expertise, and support their efforts to reinvest in their plantations. This respect-based approach strengthens trust, encourages continuous improvement, and contributes to the long-term sustainability of our shared work.

Quality

  • We work closely with farmers and cooperatives to uphold strict and consistent quality standards. Together with cupping labs, roasters, and the producers themselves, we create year-on-year strategies for improvement and consistency. This collaborative approach ensures exceptionality in the cup.
